Orange red hot poker

There are lots of species in the genus Kniphofia, originating in Africa. Although mostly flowering from early spring to late autumn depending on the species, some, from South Africa, flower in winter. They are showy, popular garden plants.

I was expecting to wake up to rain this morning but it held off for my local walk along the rural roads around here and for a brisk walk along the coastal walkway in New Plymouth before the Len Lye Center opened at 10 am.

The exhibitions were great, although I was disappointed that there weren’t more of Lye’s kinetic sculptures on display. Apparently they change them periodically. The Wind Wand display was spectacular, however. Worth the entry fee for that alone, I thought.
