Sandwick School
The Sandwick school is a junior high school and takes pupils from nursery to secondary 4. The secondary department serves an area from Cunningsburgh 5 miles to the north to Sumburgh 13 miles to the south. For a few years now there has been a suspicion that the local council would like to close the secondary department and have all pupils in that age group attend the Anderson High School in Lerwick. The theory theereafter is that Sandwick would become a "super" primary for the whole of the South Mainland of Shetland. As a result of the uncertainty it has difficulty in attracting new staff and as another consequence a number of pupils are now choosing to miss out Sandwick and head straight to Lerwick after primary. Time will tell what happens but I hear that the new Anderson High in Lerwick already has too many pupils for it size.
What remains of the old secondary school can be seen to the left of the new building. Just to the right of the new school is the local swimming pool.
