English and Welsh public footpaths and bridleways are not evenly distributed and by no means equally will used. Around us in Oxfordshire, there are perhaps six or seven footpaths out of the village and all of them are well-trodden. We have been to parts of Wales where there is a network of routes marked on the map but, when you get there, some are well used, but others are overgrown, fenced off and impassable

This picture is a visual joke, but it highlights the point that, where we are for these few days - south Derbyshire - is a maze of paths, all of which seem to be used at least occasionally, and remain open for use

I feel as if this should be some kind of challenge. Does anyone have a picture of a stile with more than seven direction arrows on it?

We have taken full advantage today. Lots of waking, fresh rural air, communal eating and wide ranging conversation mean that my eyelids are sagging and this is a short entry
