Assumption Island, Seychelles
A true paradise island, with pure white soft sand, warm turquoise water, and giant tortoises!
Assumption is a coralline formation -- very flat, with few trees and little vegetation to speak of. It has a spectacular reef with huge coral heads and a white ocean floor. Jacques Cousteau said he'd never seen any other place on earth with the same clarity of water or diversity of reef life. (Oh, how I wish I were a snorkeler!)
Mr. W is my guest photographer today -- he snapped this benevolent looking giant tortoise. He says it was "a torpid tortoise, who thought about running away, but couldn't be bothered." Ha! I don't think tortoises -- torpid or otherwise -- are ever successful at "running away!"
