The Big Idea

The Big Idea was a £14m white elephant on the site of the former ICI Nobel explosives factory on Ardeer Island at Irvine, Ayrshire.

Opened in 2000 and closed in 2003 the centrepiece science museum and theatre is abandoned and the access footbridge permanently open, to allow passage of ships, this is a misnomer since no commercial shipping uses the silted harbour which is now home to the Scottish Maritime Museum.
