After a few lovely days away it was time to go back to Berlin. We had to leave our flat by ten but our booked train wasn't until 2. We decided to go the first part of the journey to Halberstadt to visit the Cathedral. Halberstadt was mostly destroyed at the end of the 2nd world war. The towers of the cathedral (see extra) were among the few buildings left standing. The city was rebuild in typical East German concrete fashion. Even the brightly painted buildings don't really help with the general mood of the place. The church treasure did survive the war and is most amazing. Lots of textiles, some from the 12th century, reliquaries, crosses and paintings. I was particularly impressed by a hand reliquary containing a finger of St Nicholas. Kebabs at the railway station and home via Halle. The washing is on and time to go food shopping.
