Back
to Berlin. We stopped in Halle on the way back. This part of Germany was one of the four Bundeslands which belonged to the DDR. Although times have moved on there are still traces, the style of the buildings and something more difficult to pinpoint. The artist who made the wall panorama Yadegar Assisi saw the west as being superficially shiny but inwardly shallow. This was in contrast with the east which he perceived as outwardly grey but inwardly colourful. Although the wall is long gone there was a feeling of inequality here that I didn't see in the more touristy places. Bombings during war time destroyed much of this city.
We looked at the treasure in the Dom/cathedral. An impressive collection yet they left me feeling somewhat chilled. Many robes, mitres and stoles stitched by the invisible hands of invisible women. There were many tapestries but the same sentiment as above.
