a lifetime burning

Grebe

I'm not quite sure what the Great Crested Grebe was up to while it was doing this, as it was on its own with no other birds nearby.  It had been calling previously but there was no one to display to.  Perhaps it was just airing its wings - who knows.

When we looked out of the kitchen window this morning we realised that we must have missed some drama in the garden,  as there was a pile of pigeon feathers under one of the feeders, but not much else.  I imagine that the pigeon was breakfast for a sparrowhawk, but by the time we saw the scene the hawk was long gone.

One of the other wood pigeons stood for a long time looking at the pile of feathers.  If it hadn't been for the rain on the windows I might have blipped the sight as it looked for all the world as if the pigeon was thinking to itself  "Colin .... is that you?"
