A Rooftop Sunrise And The Unicorn
I woke up before anyone else this morning. I must admit I like having a bit of time to myself, a cup of coffee and to be able to sit and read a couple of chapters of my current book (in this particular instance Amongst Our Weapons by Ben Aaronovitch) without any interruption.
Today's main image was taken through our kitchen window just before I put the kettle on to make a pot of coffee and settle down with my book. The early morning mist had just dissipated slightly as the sun rose through the trees. I only spotted that there was a silhouette of a bird in the rising sun when I looked back at my image later.
For some reason me and my brother (my sister is still in the South of France) weren't feeling particularly Eastery (not sure that's an actual term) so we passed on devouring any chocolate eggs first thing but did open a bottle of Prosecco for a small toast.
We then decided a micro trip was required and set off rather aimlessly towards the Weald of Kent with no particular destination in mind. Once we passed the outskirts of Maidstone we decided to stop at the first village that we saw on a signpost, which happened to be Marden.
I can't remember having been there for years but as we entered the village we saw that a coffee shop, which had once been the village Post Office, was open and headed straight there for a cappuccino and croissant. It was doing a very healthy trade with walkers, passing cyclists and locals all clamouring for mid morning refreshments.
After we'd finished our coffees and pastries we took a stroll around the village to discover it has two pubs, Thai and Indian restaurants, a fish and chip shop, a pharmacy, a bakery, a library, a butchers, two hairdressers, a village club and a magnificent church, St Michael and All Angels, which dates back to the 13th Century.
Unfortunately, I didn't come across a live version of the legendary creature that has been described since antiquity as a beast with a single large, pointed, spiralling horn projecting from its forehead - but I did manage to capture its depiction on the outside wall of one of the pubs which is named after one (see extra). Plus what's not to love about a village whose only bus stop, opposite the pub, is called "The Unicorn"!
