Jean Batten
A bronze sculpture of New Zealand's most famous aviator who was born in Rotorua in 1909. The sculpture, by local sculptor Geoprge Andrews stands in our small Airport terminal. Jean Batten became famous in the 1930's for breaking many solo flying records the most notable being the first solo direct flight from England to New Zealand.which took 11 days 45 minutes and stood for over 40 years. Living a mainly reclusive life in her later years she very sadly died alone in a hotel in Mallorca in 1982 from complications to a dog bite and was buried in a communal paupers grave.
