St. Andrews Parish Church

St. Andrew's Parish Church, Sedbergh is the oldest building in the town. The exact date of its founding is unknown but is thought to be around 1130 A.D. There was piecemeal additions and alterations over the centuries, the tower was added in the 1300s. A major rebuild of the structure is thought to have been done in the 1500s. Until the Reformation the Church was Roman Catholic, then it passed to the Church of England. Massive restoration was undertaken both inside and out, in 1886, directed by architects Austin and Paley. This included lowering the floor of the nave, during which the bodies interred under it were dug up and re-buried in the graveyard. Unfortunately the positions were not marked. Today the Church is used by the local C. of E. congregation, and the local Roman Catholic congregation by special arrangement. Still away so cannot reply to comments or leave them, but normal service will be resumed soon.
