Woodland wild flowers.
We went out for a walk today specifically to see if we could spot some wild bluebells. When we came home from Bath at the weekend I saw some in the woods at the top of Beckfoot Lane but I knew the area of woodland alongside the R Aire near Saltaire is quite sheltered and there might by some early blooms.
As you can see in the centre and bottom right picture they are there, not in great numbers but enough to be noticed, our first bluebells.
As a bonus we had - clockwise - King Cups (Greater Celandine), Wood Anemones and Ransoms (wild garlic) as well.
We called in the Half Moon cafe for a warming coffee, it was cool again like yesterday and the sun didn’t appear until nearly the end of our walk. We had intended returning via the canal and Hirst Woods but decided instead to walk up past Milner Field, the ruins of the house built by Titus Salt Junior. We’d heard there was some tidying up going on. Sir Titus Salt senior founded the Salts alpaca mill and World Heritage village of Saltaire.
He was at one time the wealthiest man in Bradford and a great philanthropist but never owned his own property. His son built the magnificent Milner Field Manor House and entertained royalty there but his life and that of his family were beset by tragedy. The house was eventually destroyed when it couldn’t be sold as people thought it was ‘jinxed’. The most identifiable remains are the mosaic edges and floor of conservatory/orangery. Some of the other remains seemed a little less overgrown now and there were two women there moving debris. Unfortunately it has been recently reported that the teams tools have been stolen and they now have a funding page to replace them!
More here if you’re interested in this haunting place.

Exciting news when we got home. We’ve known for some time that son in law John has been working on a plastic free poppy for the Royal British Legion ( maybe a couple of years).
We couldn’t say anything until all was verified by them etc but now it is official. Come the autumn, with the exception of using up current stocks, there will be an entirely plastic free poppy available to commemorate Remembrance and it is all his design.
How fantastic is that! Well done John!
No doubt there will be more on this from me when they appear later in the year.
