Cracked

For years, Naglene has marketed its Lexan water bottles as being unbreakable. In fact, I'm pretty sure that if you break one, you get a free new one. In the past year or so, scientific research has shown these bottles to leach BPA, a chemical compound that causes a wide variety of health problems, into any water stored within them. I've carried around highly personalized, well-loved and used Nalgenes for years. When people started freaking out about BPA in Nalgenes, I was skeptical and kept using this bottle. I figure that pretty much everything (from microwaves to cell phones to tupperware) is now being accused of giving you cancer. I've been drinking from BPA-ful bottles for years; if they're going to give me cancer, it's too late to stop it.

Lately, my mom has been on my back about switching, to the point of buying me new waterbottles and offering to replace the stickers as well. I used the new bottles...when the old one wasn't around. Until a friend decided to break it. Isaac swung the bottle by the rope that long ago replaced the handle, and smacked the full bottle against the pavement a few times. To all of our surprises, it cracked cleanly down the middle. I guess they're not so unbreakable after all...

I guess it's good the bottle is finally broken--there's no other way I would have stopped using it. Now that it has drainage in the bottom, I might use it as a planter and plant flowers in it to prolong its life further.
