Northern Exposure

Spent today in the world heritage site ‘The heart of Neolithic Orkney’. The historic environment Scotland rangers had offered to do a refresher for guides and it was a great opportunity to catch up on the latest thinking on the archaeology.

The rangers were fantastic and it was a treat to be guided around the sites instead of doing the guiding. Especially on such a beautiful day.

The pic is of two of the stones at the henge monument ‘the Stones of Stenness’. One of the oldest stone circles in the British isles, dating to 3,100 BCE and with some seriously big stones. The largest are over 5m high . They never fail to impress me.
