Martin from Mars
I was caught up in the excitement of the London Marathon today. I like to see the elite races as well as all the ordinary folk who take part and raise an amazing amount of money for good causes. I ran in the very first London Marathon in 1981 when I was 27. I chummed up with Dave from Dagenham the course.
“What’s your name?” he asked.
“I’m Martin and I’m from Mars.” (Adrenaline does funny things to you. )
After a good while Dave tapped me on the shoulder and said: “Off you go you bonnie Martian.” I speeded up and somewhat suffered for it. There are no photos of me in this race but here I am in Glasgow in 1984 running my best ever marathon time.
