The Cooperage, Newcastle on Tyne.
My normal Gateshead parking place was due to be beseiged this afternoon by baby boy bands and shrieking, squealing types so I parked on the Newcastle quayside only to find that Newcastle was awash with police due to a planned (and historically disruptive) march through the city by a minority group. Poor buggers, riot gear uniforms in 20c heat. They face an afternoon of abuse and threats. And the silent majority, those who make their living and take their leisure in the City are disadvantaged on the first sunny Bank Holiday of 2013. The pic shows The Cooperage building on the Newcastle Quayside.
Large historical timber framed Newcastle pub dating to the 14th century. Previously a Coopers workshop (hence the name) in the 18th century. One of the oldest buildings in the city. The building, which is said to be haunted has stood by the River Tyne since before Shakespeare's time. It was rebuilt, probably in 18th century with brick at first storey level. Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys. Sash windows, mostly renewed. The building has been variously a merchant's dwelling, a mayoral residence, a warehouse, and a barrel factory (cooperage). It was once a lively pub but was closed due to complaints about noise. Various Sources.
