Sissinghurst Castle

This is a famous English garden but what was it’s French connection ?

In the 1760s Sissinghurst Castle was rented to the government and was used to imprison 3000 French sailors. The prisoners were bedraggled and ill-cared for as they spent their incarceration in the stink and filth of the castle. The prisoners in turn destroyed much of the fine architecture.
