‘Edinburgh Castle from Afar’
Edinburgh Castle stands on Castle Rock, a volcanic plug occupied by humans since at least the Iron Age. Dominating the Edinburgh skyline, there has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I, who built St Margarets Chapel, named after his mother, Queen Margaret, (canonised a few years later) in the 12th century. It is the oldest building in the Castle still standing.
