Neighbours

Suddenly, there is activity around the bee hotel today. I noticed that there are now holes in the sealed ends of two of the five red mason bee nests, and little bees (smaller than honeybees) were flying around investigating. These all seem to be male red mason bees - they all have distinctive cream faces. From what I understand each of the tube nests is divided into cells. Those nearest the entrance produce males, who emerge first. Further back, and I presume yet to emerge, are the females. There is a definite sense of anticipation amongst the males as they await the arrival of the females. It started raining on and off late afternoon, so these two bagged empty holes to shelter in.,
