Another surprise
The loft contents continue to produce surprises.
A large storage box contained a number of trophies belonging to B. He was unwilling to check through it and wanted to just leave it as it was, well I wanted to see them. They were wrapped as though they were the Crown Jewels and at risk of being damaged …..well no. They have sentimental value, but not a monetary value.
The trophy on the left is for the Singapore Malay Mail Big Walk 1967, B was 7th in the Individual Junior category. The walk is actually Race Walking, that funny bum wiggling style that requires one foot to be in contact with the ground at all times. If you lift and are seen by the judges you are disqualified. A bit of a blow if you are near the end of a 10km or 20km race.
The other two trophies were won in 1969. 2nd places in a 7 mile and 300 metres races in Singapore. He spent all his spare time race walking and playing tennis. There are lots of these trophies from a variety of places and countries wrapped in newspaper. The Weekend Telegraph, Saturday October 31, 1987.
I re wrapped them all, using less of the paper so that they are in a smaller box. The likelihood of them getting damaged after all these years is minimal.
He has happy memories of those days in Singapore, but race walking didn’t do his back any favours. By the time I arrived on the scene in ‘69 he was beginning a series of spinal surgery interventions.
This afternoon we went out to Hartsholme Park for our walk with Amber. Weather was good and it was busy with families and noisy ducks, geese and birds. Most enjoyable.
