Farewell to Tom
Tom didn't make it to 49. He had Crohn's disease, and the drug that was supposed to help him had the rare side effect of Cancer. He'd had it for about two years before he died in March in the Sue Ryder hospice.
I know Tom much earlier, around the time he turned 21. I lodged with his parents when I moved to Stroud, and Tom came and went, cocky and cool but always interesting, always enquiring. He seems to have been a legendary uncle to his myriad nieces and nephews, as well as an almost mediaeval craftsman. He retained a passion for the landscapes of Gloucestershire and West Yorkshire, and divided his time between the two places.
