In truth, I can't be sure which of the two decided here should be their nesting ground, but I saw the male first and imagine he was checking the lay of the land.

This was my first sighting of a female wood duck. After a brief pause to check their surroundings, they flew the length of the inlet and she into one of the nesting boxes. He resumed his sentinel position and patrolled the surrounding waters.

I feel quite excited that we have a nesting pair and hope all will be well. Perhaps we can look forward to more pairs in years to come.
