BEAUTIFUL AND NOT SO BEAUTIFUL - OR IS THAT TRUE?
Mr. HCB is very good and keeps an eye on things in the garden, so that when something is looking good, he will let me know. A few days ago, he told me that the irises would soon be out and true enough, yesterday, they were out in all their glory, but I had already decided that I would blip the apple blossom, so they had to wait until today.
So now our beautiful irises can have their 15 minutes of fame on Blip. We can’t remember where these came from but they were originally in the main part of the garden, before we dug up the whole bed and added lots of sharp sand to try and make the soil less claggy. That has worked to a degree, but these were put into one of the raised “holding beds” and because they have bloomed so well, we have never moved them back to their original bed - you will see there are still lots of buds to come out too.
The “not so beautiful” I referred to in my title is the wood pile behind the irises, which is a collection of logs and odd branches from various trees in our garden over the years that have now been made into a woodpile for insects - but perhaps the insects think it’s beautiful, even though it looks a bit of a hotch potch.
We are being encouraged not to mow our lawns for the month of May, but of course, we shall leave ours until at least September and hopefully will be rewarded with lots of insects and creepy crawlies. We have tried to keep the birds, particularly the pigeons and the magpies, off the grass, where Mr. HCB has sown the wild flower seeds and time will tell if we have been successful.
PSITHURISM : noun
From the Greek word ‘psithuros’, which means whispering, so the word means the sound wind often makes when it blows through the leaves on trees - and in case you were wondering the “p” is silent!
