Swan Lake
This afternoon we did a short walk beside the Great Langdale Beck on the Cumbria Way from Elterwater village to the head of Elter Water (“The Lake Frequented by Swans”, or “Swan Lake”, derived from Old Norse).
This is the classic view of the Langdale Pikes which you see as you emerge from a dappled sunlit bluebell wood and arrive at the lake. The path through the bluebell wood is full of the scent of wild garlic, and the damp woodland on either side of the path is resplendent with grey willow, bird cherry, marsh marigolds, wood anemones and greater stitchwort. I saw a couple of nuthatches high in a tree but unfortunately wasn’t able to get a photo in time, but it didn’t matter; the bird song was sublime and I was in seventh heaven. Another collage in extras of the woodland walk.
