Two bookshops and a signal box

We decided to make the most of a lovely day before the Bank Holiday Weekend and headed into the Yorkshire Dales. We started off with coffee and cheese scones - where else but at Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes, where cheese was also bought.

I got to two lovely little  bookshops - The Stripey Badger in Grassington and Limestone Books in Settle. Books were bought.

We went in search of a geo-cache which was at the Signal Box at Settle Station. We have been through Settle Station on the Settle Carlisle Railway, but have never been to the Station and a fine one it is too. The Signal Box is the original one built in 1891 - it was moved in 1991 to its current position to allow public access. It is a little museum (open Saturdays). I loved seeing the old 'semaphore signals'.

Also at the station is the last of the original water towers (see extra 1) along the line. Built in 1876, it is now a private house having undergone a huge renovation project.

We followed an adventure trail through Settle, which was very interesting (thanks Puffin!). The trail ended at the church where in the porch there is a memorial to all the people who lost their lives during the construction of the railway (see extra 2)

(Extra 3) is the view of Settle viaduct from the churchyard.

Then we went home. A great day in the sunshine.
