Spring advances
Last night was night one of 2023 in the camper van. Thanks for the faves and stars for that view across the sea into the not entirely dark midnight sky. It was chilly (2°C) but we had enough bedding and it was mostly quiet. One car arrived about 2 a.m. and idled for ten minutes and so before driving away again. A German camper was parked 50 m away. We woke up to a sunny morning and once I put the heating on we warmed up quickly.
And now onto today's blip, taken in our garden.
Where do all those small beasties (voles, mice, forest rats, lemmings etc) go when the ground is covered in snow. Basically they start to live under the snow. It's not a bad place to live with a cool but fairly steady temperature, no wind to worry about, and not too many predators. You can build a nest out of moss to stay cosy. Which is what we are seeing here as the snow melts, revealing these moss nests, or are they tunnels? This little group cover about one and a half square metres, there's a similar group a bit away across the "lawn". These constructions disappear withing a day or two wónce the snow has gone. They dry out, get picked apart by birds, blow away...
Spring advances, with some very sunny days, such as on the 5th, which I just backblipped.
