Souterrain

A really lovely wander up CastleHill for sunset. View in pic south west to Glencorse reservoir.

On the way up I passed a sign for the Hill Fort and was surprised (and delighted) to find not only the ancient ditches where ramparts would have been but also a 21ft souterrain or earth house dating back about 2,000 years. Amazing & I can’t believe I’ve never see it before.

It was excavated in the 1930’s and they added a concrete roof and skylights so that the public to view it. It is under the care of Historic Scotland now. Fascinating. Few extra pics added including the souterrain.
