River Wear, Durham

Endless possibilities in Durham. The cathedral and the castle are obvious as well as the Market Square, the old streets and views from the river.

After a great breakfast at the cafe in the Indoor Market we explored this lovely city. Made our way to the Cathedral up the winding streets. It was worth the visit, the Cathedral is a very special and welcoming place with the shrine to St Cuthbert and Bede amongst other treasures. The tower was open and 325 steps took you to the top and the weather being sunny and spectacularly clear, the views were astounding both of Durham, spread out below, and the surrounding countryside.

I liked this shot because of the reflections and the rowers filling in the space at the bottom right of the picture. It's not old buildings either, but modern buildings that fit in with the spirit of the place. The High Street was new, the backs of which can be seen at the top of the shot. But the High Street was well done, mimicking the old buildings, varying in height, style and material. Well done in my view. Not like Fremlin's Walk in Maidstone which is all the same!

A walk past the university's colleges and along the river completed our morning in the city and we headed back to Kent and home.
