Blue John

Today we visited the Blue John Cavern for a tour and history of the rare and precious form of fluorite, locally called Derbyshire Spar. The rarity comes from the yellow tints combined with the purpley-blue. Extra 2 of some stone in situ, this is about 18inches (45cms) top to bottom.

Afterwards we visited the museum in Buxton where this case displays many of the decorative ways the stone was used. There are superb examples of stained glass in the museum but I can't publish the photos until home.

Extra photo also in Buxton, of the stained glass depiction of Saint Ann in the Pump Room, built for Taking the Waters, close to St Ann's Well.

At present the sun is shining but we have had very heavy rain, with surface water and a flood but this has not held us back.
