It took Timothy all his power of persuasion to finally manage to convince Ethel that jumping into the bay was perhaps not such a good idea. 
That show off French bollix really was a bad influence. Ethel was so easily influenced. He had always loved her almost child-like enthusiasm for pushing the boundaries, her fascination for the forbidden, her willingness to try new things. 
But now that they were both in their seventies, the tender fondness for her funny little ways was gradually giving way to a rising weariness.
