DoF problem?

I've been messing about with the "Macro" part of the "Thingy".

Today I had a selection of wee Bee-like "Beesties" choosing, for a reason I couldn't determine, to sit on the Rhododendron leaves.  Beware of the - BUT - but a number of problems made for a difficult project.

Firstly - the wee beasties chose to sit at about 5'-8" a bit far forward for my 5'-7" 
Next - we have fact they refused to sit for long. - SO - I decided to try and have a short burst as I withdrew.  Had I had a Tripod taller than mine I'd have needed a Box to stand on.

Conclusion - Macro part of "Thingy" needs both an inanimate subject &/or a very "flat" DoF &/or a Tripod of suitable height.
