Modern church furniture...
...in an ancient edifice...
This is the ambo and altar in Wakefield Cathedral - beautiful workmanship in oak and burr oak!
Designed when the cathedral was refurbished in order to become more easily re-arranged into different spaces and for different community uses.
Pews are a thing of the past, and lightweight chairs have replaced them. The brief for the altar and ambo - a new word on me, but it's a sort of cross between a pulpit and a lectern - was that they had to be sturdy enough to withstand being regularly moved.
The cathedral dates from the 15th Century, the furniture from the 21st!
