Magdalene Street Buildings.
This area around the river Cam, Cambridge, was the site for coaching inns, factories, merchant houses and warehouses, making use of the river's resources and the trade at the crossing point. The isolation and poverty of this area saved it from being demolished in Victorian times, and even in the 1930's, Magdalene College was too poor to carry out a plan to demolish the street up to the bridge. Subsequently, the street was preserved with the assistance of the college and is one of the oldest in Cambridge. The present bridge over the Cam was built in 1823, and some buildings, dating from the 1500's, are now listed. The area is a huge tourist attraction.
