Pétanque or Boules?

Today A and I:
Looked around for a new car, went to homebase, explored the bank holiday market, sat by the river, relaxed out in the garden, met some friends for dinner in a pub garden and went to see Gatsby at the cinema. I'm tired again now.

Whilst waiting for our food at the pub we played boules (or pétanque). I've always known it as boules but does anyone know the difference?
