Eyam

We had a day out in the Peak District today and visited the 'Plague Village' of Eyam. St.Lawrence's church stands in the centre of the village. (See my extra).  
The plague arrived in 1665 via a bolt of cloth from London delivered to a local tailor. 
The local rector convinced the villagers to quarantine themselves from the outside world and let the plague run its course, preventing the spread of the disease to nearby villages.
In the churchyard stands a striking Saxon Cross dating from the late 8th Century. It was  originally a wayside preaching cross. It was discovered beside an ancient trackway during the 18th century, dug up, and erected here.  It is in remarkably good condition.
