24 Nights

In 1991 Eric Clapton played 24 concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, having played 18 nights there the year before. Over each run there was a mix of 4 piece band, blues band, 13 piece band and full orchestra. All these concerts were recorded and filmed and an album was subsequently released of all the best bits.
In June, there is to be a much expanded version released with a lot of previously unreleased tracks and a blu-ray film of the concert. But prior to the release of that, the film was to be shown for one night only in the cinema. Unfortunately for us, that night was last Wednesday, when we were seeing Oklahoma. But when I searched for screenings near Kendal, I spotted that the cinema at Rheged was showing the film this Saturday on their big screen - result!
And excellent it was too - EC and other talented musicians at their best. Several tracks I’d not heard before, including a superb orchestral version of Layla.
We saw Eric Clapton at the NEC arena on the Journeyman Tour, which was around the same time as the Albert Hall concerts. And we saw him at the RAH twenty years later in 2011. So this film was a reminder of both those events, which made it even better.
I’m not sure I’ll be shelling out for the deluxe box set when it’s released, but I suspect I will definitely be buying the remastered CDs with all the extra tracks on.
