The age of fishes
In 1955 a road worker uncovered a large slab of rock containing fish fossils near Canowindra. The fossils are 360 million years old and were created when a large freshwater billabong dried up, leading to a mass fish kill. In 1993 Dr Alex Richie of the Australian Museum carried out a dig that resulted in the discovery of some thousands of fossils. Then the funds ran out and the site was buried.
No less an authority than David Attenborough has described the fossils as ’world class’. It’s to be hoped that the necessary funds and permissions (they are on private land) can be found soon.
