Rest stop
If you have to stop somewhere on a long car journey, make it a nature reserve. There are many located conveniently close to most major motorways and as long as you have plenty of water and a packed lunch, they beat service stations every time.
We paused at Brockadale on the way from one end of the country to the other and spent a distracted and delightful two hours exploring its woods and meadows. This beautiful tree proved climbable (happy D) and we found early purple orchids growing on the slopes above the wood.
Feeling rejuvenated we got back on the road and completed the drive in a surprisingly short time.
