from Lake Hayes …

….. ….. ….. to Shackleton.

The day began with a walk along the north side of Lake Hayes, and then back again. The reflections were beautiful at the beginning, as in the photo. It was really chilly and my hands didn’t warm up until we got to the far end. There wetlands at the west end of the lake have more water fowl in them now - there’s one in Extras, but no ID.

I did some gardening after lunch, planting out some yellow & white primroses for some winter brightness, plus some white flowering kale.

The highlight of the day was going to see the movie Shackleton. Narrated by Tim Jarvis, who has attempted to replicate Shackleton’s feats, and including the amazing photography of Frank Hurley, the movie brings it all to life; some of it harrowing. But incredibly the 28 men who began the expedition, all finish it, thanks largely to Shackleton’s sterling leadership.

Sir Raymond Priestly:
“For scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton.”

I’ve been to South Georgia as well as Elephant Island, so it was poignant to see the filming of places I’ve visited.
