An enclosed steel and glass bridge connecting a Marks & Spencer department store with the Arndale Shopping Centre became a symbol of Manchester's rebirth after the IRA bombing of the city in 1996. Stretching the width of Corporation Street, the original bridge took the full blast of the bomb that had been placed in a van almost directly below.
