Collieston pier
Towards the end of the 19th Century when about 50 yawls, manned by 200 fishermen were fishing out of the fishing village of Collieston, proposals to provide a deep, sheltered harbour were put forward. On 17th October 1894, Lady Gordon Cathcart of Cluny Castle, the proprietor of Slains Estate, laid the foundation stone for the pier to be built. On the far horizon you might be able to make out the offshore wind farm which really, really upset The Donald who thought that they spoiled the view from his new golf course.
The extra shows some of the old fisherman's cottages. The terrace of houses in the background were provided for coastguard officers.
Collieston was where we made our first home after we were married. A rather more famous resident was Aircraftsman Shaw, better known as T. E Lawrence (El Lawrence of Arabia) who in 1931 holidayed at 15 The Cliff with his two companions, Jock and Jimmy.
