The road to Corbridge

Chris and Janice were the first proper friends I made in Kirby Lonsdale. He had recently taken on the role of head teacher at the local secondary school, and Janice and my wife met at a baby group, where they were taking Tom and Hannah, respectively.

My marriage ended, but the friendship didn't. I would regularly see Chris for a drink, but have dinner with the pair of them from time to time, too. They are both excellent company, and Janice is regarded by my children and their peers as the best English teacher they've ever had.

After Chris retired, they moved to Corbridge, which made absolute sense as both of their children are in Newcastle, but I was very sorry to see them go.

This weekend, the Minx and I are staying with them, and we set off, this morning, going up through Sedbergh and Kirkby Stephen, and then enjoying a fabulous drive across to the north-east. It was a stunning drive and today's Blip, taken from the passenger seat of the car, really doesn't do it justice.

Despite the complications of us arriving with a deflating tyre that needed attention, we had an enjoyable afternoon, walking along the Tyne, visiting the bookshop in Corbridge, as well as a bar built into the Pele Tower.

All this was followed by an evening of great food - Janice is an amazing cook - wine, and conversation. A terrific day all in (tyre notwithstanding).
