Down down deeper than down

Its raining so todays day with Grandad includes a trip down a coal mine who said Kids cant go down the mine any more.
National coal mine museum is located near Wakefield, book your underground tour at main reception as soon as you arrive because they fill up quickly( you can prebook them at a cost) and purchase a 'check' for the refundable cost of £2. We kept ours and paid for the mine train ride (£1 retrun) for when we got out to nip up to the machinery stores.

We arrived at half ten and got on the eleven O'clock underground tour.
We went over to the lamp room picked up our safety helmet, dropped off our contraband and picked up our battery pack and lamp.

We stood by the shaft lift on clear perspex to look down to a red lamp sat on the bottom of the 495 foot shaft you could see the water running down parts of the brick shaft wall, Megan wasn't too keen on standing on the clear plastic at first but she made it in the end. Then we crammed in the lift and went down at a fairly sedate rate then we spent about an hour and 15 minutes to see the different ages of mining, from Victorian times where women and children worked underground alongside men, through to pit ponies and modern machinery. Kevin our guide told us about his working life and experiences in the mines and the major distasters that changed mining laws.

Contraband items, including cigarettes, lighters and battery or electronically operated equipment, camera, car key fobs phones etc.
Children must be over 5 to go on the underground tour.

We took the mine train trip to the outside stores area but as it was raining we decided to go to Bury to get a ride on a steam train but the trians dont run on a tuesday - whats that all about -

Another good grandad day out - something Megans unlikely to do a bit off the wall
