Bomb Disposal

Today was the best day since records began and for the forseeable future. While still wet, thought I could now attack the vegetable plot (no longer garden). First quickly de-mucked the horse field but noticed right alongside a hedge, a large piece of metal in the earth which looked like I had often hit with the mower blades. Got spade & started digging and uncovered a large 12.5cm diameter very solid metal pipe. There was no way it was there for a "normal purpose". After uncovering a meter, I began to have thoughts it could perhaps be some kind of bomb. As it was then break time, came indoors & checked out on internet but luckily nothing looked similar. Memmingen Airport, just a few km away, was heavily bombed in WWII.
When I returned thought I would risk it. Got out the petrol generator, the angle grinder & set to work, thinking of tomorrows headline "Brit gets blown up by Allied bomb". Well I survived and then realised what it probably was; the spot is at a very low point on the property & someone had put the pipe in to drain flood water in to the stream on the other side of the hedge. Pipe was full of clay soil and attempts with the high pressure hose drawing water from the stream had no real impact - pipe is probably 3 meters long.
That was my gardening day. In the evening walked with the dogs the 4km to Sontheim railway station to meet Angie who then drove us to Erkheim to pick up my car after having a new exhaust pot and it's MOT. Lovely evening but now at 9:00pm the real rain has arrived which is due to stay at least until Sunday & may cause some flooding. Daytime temperature will again drop in to single figures!
