Ready Ready !!
During the "heat wave" two weeks ago when it seemed that spring was really here I started lots of seeds for outside planting. Then the week+ of sub-zero night time temps arrived. Last night should be the last cold one because we now expect two rainy nights of thunder storms and by the end of this (short) week highs are predicted in the 30º's C. Slug killing time has arrived.
Pictured here:
The leggy winter squash in the white foam boxes are special heirloooms. Winter Luxury was my all time favourite from last year. It is divinely sweet and nutty tasting making non-stringy soups, pies, and a simple side dish. Looks like a small gold and green pumpkin. And the new one I will try this year is called the Australian Butternut squash. It is right next to the Winter Luxury. The early settlers (Puritans) named it a "luxury" because it was so delicious during the long, hard New England winters... and they were famous for nixing luxuries.
Sign up for seeds now to be mailed in the fall or winter to you. If you live in Australia I'd love to hear if this butternut squash is a good one? It is supposed to be "early" and thus take less time to ripen.
The pink petunia and the tomato plant on the far left are purchased. It looks as if ALL of the tomato seeds I started are up, even those from last year that were not saved very well. Oh dear... We have a tomato blight here in New England close relative to the Irish potato blight of the 1880's. Very discouraging growing them in the ground. I had one success last year. The fungus is predicted to last for several years. Growing them in pots is a good idea. Do they grow potatoes in ireland any longer?
Well, that's my (window) garden report.... please make no comment on the filth of the outside window. Unlike someone 9you know who you are) who squeegees windows every 3 months (!) these have not been done your as many years.
