ROAD BLOCK & HOME
ROAD BLOCK at West entrance of Byers Canyon, just west of Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado. A mere 20 miles from our cabin. Police stopped us, so we’re second in a long line of over 200 vehicles behind us.
BYERS CANYON a winding highway above the Colorado River. Very steep, you’ll see if you pause at a pull-over to look down. Very noisy, as the Colorado roars through rocks and debris. Union Pacific Train tracks hug the river down below, and would provide a crazy ride.
DISAPPEARANCE of 35 year old Ari Harms. Last seen May 28 getting into an inflatable kayak on the Colorado River at Pioneer campground, in Hot Sulphur Springs.
SEARCHING by helicopter, drones and by foot, sheriffs found a backpack, kayak and other items belonging to Harms in the river, but no other sign of him.
SATURDAY searching went farther downstream on the river. This required periodic closure to give room to special water search dogs and rock repellers.
ARI’S SISTER wants her joyous brother to be more than a sheriff’s report. I can’t imagine her sadness. The start of his kayaking would have been smooth water. Did he not know about category IV rapid ahead?
CANYON OPENS after 45 minutes, faster than the 3 hours police first thought.
I snapped a quick photo of the roadblock, I’m not sure the police would want me taking a bunch of photos.
