Sorry, more railway history
On the way back from Orange today, I carried out a short detour to have a closer look at a lesser known but still magnificent example of historic railway infrastructure. It’s the Marrangaroo viaduct on the Great Western Line just west of Lithgow. I’ve blipped John Whitton creations before, notably the Lithgow Zig Zag about 12 months ago.
JW was a Yorkshireman who was Chief Engineer of the NSW railways from 1856 - 1890, who despite being a thoroughly cranky &@$!?#%, is regarded as one of the world’s greatest ever railway engineers. As a student, he was tutored by the great man himself, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
