Military orchid
A super exciting afternoon for me as I saw the Military orchid for the first time. The Military orchid is very rare in the UK, found at only three locations, one of which turned out to be less than half an hour from our temporary home. It was thought to be extinct in Britain but was re-discovered at this site in 1947. The common name derives from the helmet-shaped hood and the two rows of 'buttons'. I shall take Mrs L there to see them tomorrow.
