Frass

If you didn’t know, this the Frass covered larva of the scarlet lily beetle.

The larvae hatch from the eggs and as they munch their way through the lily, they cover themselves in excrement which gives them protection against predators and the sun.

You can see the damage caused to the leaf and if you look closely, part of the larva at the bottom end of the pile.
