More drainage
MariainWales visited today for the first time for ages. It was good to catch up.
Around mid-day the site manager turned up to talk with my neighbour so I asked him about yesterday's pipes. Yes, he's often seen them but he hadn't seen any during my build. He was perplexed about why I was excavating and I said I wanted rid of the concrete lump so that future plant roots can grow unhindered. So he picked up a nearby sledgehammer and smashed it.
This evening, after Maria had left for grandparental duties, I turned my mind back to drainage pipes and wondered whether I might be able to get one out (extra) and convert it into a vase. As I poked under them impatiently with my garden trowel I couldn't help thinking of archaeologists painstakingly removing the soil from around buried objects with teaspoons and brushes. I did wonder a long time ago about being an archaeologist but it would have been a very bad career choice for me.
Two of the pipes had been cracked by the sledgehammer but I managed to dig further and excavate three reasonably whole ones.
